The homework myth: an unnecessary evil
By Alfie Kohn, published by psychology today
Homework is a work that is given by the teachers for students to do at home. Based on my research, I found that some people said that homework is unnecessary but, other said it helped them in maintaining a good grade in school. From the research article, ‘The Homework Myth: Homework: An Unnecessary Evil?’ written by Alfie Kohn (November 24, 2012), it was stated that there is no positive correlation between homework for elementary students and their achievement. There is a positive effect in high school for the homework in math and science subject. Moreover, high school students did their math and science homework to get a better result for the test which differs from the elementary school’s homework which does not give any benefit to the student. Thus, homework is given to the students mainly for the teacher to ensure and identify whether the students understand what they had taught.
In my opinion, I do not think that homework is necessary for students because students completed their homework for the sake of their teachers not for themselves. Based on my experience, I myself learned not much from homework back when I was still in school. I did learn something from the homework, but not much. For example, I got tons of homework for Chemistry and completed it one by one. But I can only remember two or three things from the homework that was given. However, I believe that homework is more useful as a revision to study for the upcoming test or exam. Other than that, even though some people feel the elementary student should not be given a lot of homework because they have had enough of learning session in schoo,l but to let them explore new things at home to develop their young mind. I disagree with the issue because homework does not mean only for the academic purposes but can be sport or even curriculum purposes’ and actually train them to be discipline in the future.
In conclusion, homework can either give positive and negative in people’s perspective.
{Well, to be honest homework actually give us a lot of benefit in our life in the future. Help us to maintain our common sense, learn how to solve problems and more. But giving it too much can put the pressure to the students because they have to catch up with other subjects. So, doing homework for the benefit not for the teacher to marking their books at their free time.} --> just evil in the students' eye. hahahaha We are lazy that's all.
